Super Bowl 57: Kansas City Chiefs fight back to beat Philadelphia Eagles
The Kansas City Chiefs are once again NFL champions, having clinched their second championship in just four years. The thrilling Super Bowl 57 was a historic occasion, as it featured two of the country’s best quarterbacks who also happened to be black, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.
Taking place in Arizona, the game pitted the two top-seeded teams from each conference against each other, the first time this had happened since 2018. It proved to be a high-scoring encounter, with Mahomes and the Chiefs coming out on top in a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The game got off to a flying start, with both teams exchanging scores in the first quarter. The Chiefs struck first, with a touchdown from Travis Kelce, only for the Eagles to respond with a score from their running back, Miles Sanders. But the Chiefs quickly regained the lead with a touchdown from Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The second quarter was equally tight, with both teams scoring two touchdowns each to leave the game finely poised at 21-21 heading into halftime. But things took a turn for the worse for the Chiefs when Mahomes appeared to re-injure his right ankle, which had been a concern for the team heading into the game.
Despite this setback, the Chiefs came out strong in the third quarter, taking the lead once again with a touchdown from Kelce. However, the Eagles were not to be outdone, and they responded with two scores of their own to take a 27-21 lead heading into the final quarter.
It was at this point that Mahomes stepped up and produced one of the great quarterback performances in Super Bowl history. He threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the Chiefs back in front, and then engineered a final drive that set up Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal with just eight seconds left on the clock.
For his heroics, Mahomes was named the Super Bowl’s LVII Most Valuable Player, having already been awarded the season MVP. It was a remarkable achievement for the 27-year-old, who became the first player since the year 2000 to win the season MVP, the Super Bowl, and the Super Bowl MVP in the same season.
